Elective - Newsletters (Communications)

E-Newsletters

Introduction: Below are two e-newsletters that I have found useful, and would recommend to most teachers and media specialists.

Newsletter: TeacherVision.com's Great Stuff for Teachers
To Subscribe: <http://www.teachervision.com/tv/lounge/newsletter/great-stuff-signup.html>

Summary/Description:

Bimonthly newsletter provides ideas and activities to enhance your curriculum by subject and/or theme. Also highlights professional topics, resources and products.

The two issues I have received seem to highlight a particular subject area (the first focused on science & social studies, the second on math), as well as make you aware of some time-relevant themes (i.e. Independence Day for June/July newsletters.) When you click on the links, it takes you to the website where you can review & print lesson plans, worksheets, quizzes, and more.

Evaluation:

The website seems to be a very useful starting place for creating lesson plans and activities. The newsletter itself may not serve much of a purpose other than as a reminder that the site exists, or to introduce you to the types of things available on the website.

Recommendation:

I would recommend it, because it serves as a starting point to teachers who don't have a lot of time to surf the net. Also, this site has more specialized newsletters for those involved in teaching literature, science or special needs.

Newsletter: Carol Hurst's Children's Literature Newsletter
To Subscribe: <http://www.carolhurst.com/newsletters/newsletters.html>

Summary/Description:

Monthly newsletter introduces new books, featured subjects and books, revisits old favorites, features an author/illustrator, introduces the latest on the Carol Hurst web site (such as reading lists or features), lists upcoming workshops Carol will be presenting, and provides information on related resources both on and off the Internet. Also links to archived editions of the newsletter.

Evaluation:

The Carol Hurst site is recognized as an expert resource in the Library Media field, so I trust the information in this newsletter and on the website. It goes beyond simply pointing back to the website to provide real information that you can browse through.

Recommendation:

Highly recommended to anyone interested in children's literature!
