As an
attorney I would also find out if this form would need a release of liability
or not. I did not include it here
because I think it would be intimidating to the parent and the student. However, if it is required by the school
district, it must be included, and they most likely will dictate the wording.

Part
II: Possible Sites for Publishing Student Work:
As a
future media specialist (I hope!) I thought it would be best for me to locate
sites covering a range of ages and types of work.)
Please
note that as a teacher you must get parental permission and student permission
before submitting any work to these sites.
1. Scholastic.com
student poetry publishing:
Scholastic Publishing Company maintains this site where students from
Pre-K to 12 can submit their poetry for publication with just their first name,
last initial, State and grade.
(Students will want to have their parents or teachers submit this on
their e-mail address,) Scholastic
reserves the right to edit the works, does not guarantee that every work will
be published on their site, and also reserves the right to promote the
work. This site does take steps to
protect the privacy and security of the students who submit work. Date visited April 2, 2004.

2. The Poetry Zone: A U.K. poet by the name of Roger Stevens
started this site in order to give children of all ages a chance to publish
their poetry online. He has published
several books with very reputable publishers, and this appears to be a good
site. He notes on the site that
children must get parental permission before submitting work to this site. The site requires that all submissions
include the child author’s name and age.
It appears that just a first name is ok. He will publish a child’s full name if it is given to him, and
the child’s age, but no other identifying information. Not all work will be published, and the site
offers advice on how to tailor a submission in a way to make it more likely to
be published. Date visited April 2,
2004.

3. Writers’ Window: This web site, sponsored by the New Zealand
Ministry of Education, publishes all writing (that complies with their guidelines)
submitted to it by students from age 5 to 18.
The site is VERY conscious of maintaining the privacy and security of
students who submit their work, and also is mindful of the copyrights of
students. Students can receive feedback
on their writing from other students.

4. The Virtual Refrigerator
Door: This site publishes artwork done by children age 2 to 18. It is maintained by Hobson’s, a company that
publishes (online and in hard copy) information for colleges and for students
who are applying to college. It does
publish the full name and age of the artist, but does not publish any other
information about them. The artwork can
be sent electronically, or can be snail-mailed to the site, scanned by them,
and then returned to the artist. It is
not clear whether they publish all of the artwork sent to them or not. Before I actually sent artwork to this site,
I would want to contact them and find out about their policies, especially
those involving privacy and copyright.
