PUBLICATIONS – ELECTIVE # 6

  1. Computers in Libraries:  The purpose of this publication is to help keep school and other librarians up-to-date on news and issues in the field of library information technology.  While a lot of the information in this publication looks like Greek to me right now, I can tell by the titles of the articles that I going to need to learn how to interpret this language in order to be an effective and informed media specialist. This year they are running a continuing article on how to buy various types of library technology, which appears to be extremely useful and informative.  They also have articles on the very latest developments in library technology, and on how libraries are successfully integrating new technologies into their existing mission (i.e. how to decide what publications to buy online as opposed to hardcopies).

  1. eSchool News online: This in the online counterpart to e School News.  It contains articles of use to both school administrators and teachers on diverse topics such as: the latest actions of the FCC, articles on viruses such as “my doom”, best practices information on how schools are using technology, and how school laptop programs are faring.  Their Netwatch feature covers web sites that might be of interest to teachers for use in the classroom as well as sites that might be of help to administrators when making technology decisions for their school(s).  Another useful feature that they offer is a Buyer’s Guide to school technology products and services.  This would be of invaluable help in finding out what kinds of things are available, and then figuring out which are the best for your school’s situation. In addition, the publication includes information on upcoming conferences involving technology in education, a subject of special interest to school media specialists.

  1. MultiMedia & Intenet @Schools: This is the online counterpart to a hard copy publication of the same name.  It is directed specifically at school media specialists and school technology specialists, and it is an incredibly useful publication.   Each issue contains well-written articles on the uses of technology and the Internet in education.  There are several articles in each issue directed specifically to issues involving the school media center, such as Connecting the Classroom and the Library: How One School Uses Web-Based Library Projects to Build Information Literacy Skills.  Also included are product reviews of new software, information on new hardware, and a NetWatch section filled with information and news concerning what is available on the Internet that can aid in teaching students Grades K-12.  This is a publication I plan on reading every month and using frequently.

  1. T & L Magazine:  This is the online counterpart to Technology and Learning Magazine.  It offers an assortment of information, including feature articles on technology issues, a section on trends in technology, information on products related to technology, a how to section, and a section on sites of note on the web (such as the Library of Congress’ site.)  As a school media specialist, articles like Library Automation: A Buying Guide would be of invaluable use.  Also, each month they highlight a different school web site, which, were I the person responsible for my school’s web site, would keep me thinking about what other useful features or information I could be adding to my site.

  1. the New curriculum:  This publication’s stated mission is to “Help[] Teachers Integrate New Technologies Into Their Teaching,” and they offer a monthly technology column of their own, as well as links to articles on technology topics, a section on resources, information on conferences concerning technology in education, and a section dedicated to their best of the web selections.  They also have a link to an edtech discussion group that allows you to participate in an international discussion on the use of technology in education, and a “Lesson Bank” full of links to sources of lessons that incorporate technology in teaching.  As a school media specialist, this publication would help keep me up to date on new developments in technology and education.   It would also be a source of ideas and inspiration in creating lessons that incorporate technology, both for myself, and for other teachers.   Their main article this month is about how to choose software to make teacher web pages, and would certainly be a useful one for a school media specialist who is asked for advice on this topic!
