Description:    This journal article examines the disconnect between what teachers’ attitudes about technology in relationship to what actually happens in the classroom. Although many educators say they support technology, believe in its benefits and value its importance, they don’t often incorporate it into their lessons for various reasons. 

 

 

The Best of the Best: Analyzing Search Engines

Audience: Teachers and students looking for a variety of different tools to use to locate information on the internet

Internet Module: Show Me the Money!

Audience: Teachers, administrators and other people who wish to explore different ways to get money and grants for educational purposes.

Sound Moods (Elective 2)

Audience: Secondary English teachers

DESCRIPTION: Students will identify the mood and tones created by sounds to help reinforce denotation and connotation. Students will also select sounds to create their own “sound” poem, which will then be traded for to a “writer,” who will put words to the sounds.

 

 

Online Music Subscription Services (Elective 3)

Audience: Educators, adults, older children, consumers, etc.

DESCRIPTION: A brief summary of popular music subscriptions and a lesson that employs the use of one of the subscription services. The lesson requires students to consider the link between song and poetry.  Students will also use narrative story structures in their activity.

Web Drop-In #1 Universal Human Rights: Should Everyone in Every Country Have Equal Human Rights?

Audience: Fits well with 9th grade novels, texts and units: Anthem, Night, The Giver, various short stories, persuasive unit, etc. Also could be used in social studies, psychology, social sciences curriculum areas, etc.

DESCRIPTION: Students will be investigating and evaluating an international declaration of human rights. They also will be considering the current living situation in a given country and determine if the country is violating human rights. Finally, they will need to decide whether or not intervention should occur.

DESCRIPTION:  Many people believe that discrimination no longer exists and that everyone is treated equally. By examining and analyzing several charts measuring attitudes about discrimination, students will draw their own conclusions about discrimination in the United States and other countries. In a future activity they will examine more information that will help them determine whether or not discrimination remains a problem, especially in the United States.

 

 

Web Drop-In #3 Using Google Earth to Track Odysseus’ Journey

Audience: 9th grade English or content areas that study maps, geography, mythology, human struggles and conflicts

DESCRIPTION: Part of the ninth-grade English narrative unit could include reading Homer’s The Odyssey. To help students not only visualize the journey taken by Odysseus but also contemplate the conflicts caused by the various settings, students will take a Lit Trip using Google Earth. At each stop, they will record and analyze different pieces of information.

 

Web Drop-In #4 The Use of Performance Enhancing Drugs

Audience: 9th grade English or content areas that involve persuasive research, current events and health, drug and athletic issues,

DESCRIPTION: In many curriculum areas, including ninth-grade English, persuasive writing, debate and research skills are emphasized. In this web activity, students will consider different sides to the issue of athletes using performance enhancing drugs. They will read and evaluate different points of view by visiting several websites that discuss the issue.

 

 

 Web Drop-In #5 Investigating Extreme Settings

Audience: 9th grade English or content areas that explore the impact of the environment on behavior, conflicts, etc.

DESCRIPTION: Students will explore an extreme environment and create a feature analysis chart. They then will determine what types of problems or conflicts the different features of the environment can create. A final research session will require students will produce a safety tip list for travelers to their extreme environment.
