Here is a list which I feel as a mother, small business owner, and future-educator are the best. I have included 7 categories with at least 2 sites for each type.
KID SAFE SEARCH ENGINES
Yahooligans - Search engine designed by Yahoo for kids. Kids can search, play games, answer polls, find answers to thought provoking questions, or watch television shows. This site is very kid friendly.

AOL@SCHOOL Elementary - This search engine is really good for kids searching. Site is based through educational learning. I really like this site for several reasons. My favorite is that when the search results are shown, each item has the grade levels it is appropriate for. Also the annotations are written so kids can read easily and understand.

Ask Jeeves for Kids - Site designed by Ask Jeeves to give kids a safe place to search for answers and learn new things. Provides many study guides and provides games and fun also.
