Take a trip on the Underground Railroad
As fourth graders, you have been learning about various times in Maryland history. Living in Maryland was very different in 1850. If you were a slave, would you do anything to be free? We have learned about Harriet Tubman and her plight for freedom. Visit the site The Underground Railroad presented by National Geographic and learn how she helped others as well. You will follow the railroad from beginning to end.
1. Why did the slaves refer to Harriet Tubman as “Moses”? Why did they change and call her “General Tubman”?
2. Where did the Underground Railroad end? Why did it end there instead of somewhere else?
3. Write a paragraph on whether you would choose to stay a slave or attempt freedom at any cost including death.
