General Search Engines

Google - Google is an extensive search engine.  It provides so many results, that it can feel like too much to look through.  Google was voted four times "Most Outstanding Search Engine" by Search Engine Watch readers.  Besides web pages, Google also provides discussion groups and news information.

Yahoo - Yahoo provides excellent search results.  It looks like a general webpage, with links to images, Yellow Page listings, and driving directions on Yahoo Maps.  It has many links on its mainpage, so it presents itself like a news homepage.  You can immediately see the latest headlines, or even view your horoscope.

Kid Safe Search Engines

Yahooligans - Yahooligans is Yahoo for kids.  It is a web guide for kids.  Yahooligans is set up like Yahoo's mainpage, except it has cartoon graphics, with links to sites that are appropriate for children.  It includes links to games and topics that kids would find interesting.

Ask Jeeves Kids - Ask Jeeves Kids is a search engine for kids to ask simple questions and receive links to websites to find the answers. Along with links to answers, there are also links to other search engines which could find the answer.  Ask Jeeves Kids also has links to games, news, and study tools for students.

Government Search Engines

FirstGov.gov - This is the U.S. Governments official web portal.  It provides links to an extensive amount of information.  You can search by many different categories, such as by organization, by citizen, by federal employee, by nonprofit, by audience, etc.  Their are also links with ways to contact the government or you can look up information in a reference center.

Google Uncle Sam - This is another version of Google, but the results are limited to pages from U.S. Governement websites.  You can also link to regular Google from this page.

News Search Engines

Google News  - Google won Best News Search Engine from Search Engine Watch in 2002.  You can search and browse through 4,500 news sources.  The mainpage is full of new stories, with many links to more news articles.  You can search by keyword, like regular Google, but you can also search by category.  There is also a link to view a text version, where the news links can be viewed in a list without the little photos.

Yahoo News - Yahoo News was Second-place winner for Best News Search Engine for 2002, by Search Engine Watch.  It is very similar to Google News.  Next to each news section, there is a list of links to newspapers online.

Shopping Search Engines

Yahoo Shopping - Yahoo Shopping won Best Shopping Search Engine from Search Engine Watch in 2002.  It connects you to thousands of merchants.  You can search by category or keyword.  Seasonal items are featured with photographs on the mainpage.

Dealtime - Dealtime also won
Best Shopping Search Engine from Search Engine Watch in 2002.  Dealtime is not as visual as Yahoo Shopping.  They launched a new site called Shopping.com, which provides options from Dealtime and Epinions, which provides product reviews.
