Elective #10 - Internet Safety
Internet Safety
|
September 1, 2002
Dear Parents, One of the world's most powerful technologies is the internet. The internet gives users almost total freedom to the world, its information, and the activities that it holds. Its power and influence is not to be denied. With that in mind, an important part of your child's education is the development of computer skills and the use of the internet. It is my intention to integrate both into instruction throughout the year. Sometimes parents become concerned for their child's safety when they hear that their child will have access to the internet. I will try to allay some of those concerns. During the first weeks of school, I will instruct the students on the necessary rules to stay safe. Internet Safety Rules have been created for students. We will discuss each rule in the classroom, but you are asked to review them at home with your child. Both students and their parents will be required to sign the checklist as a confirmation of acceptance. These Internet Safety Rules will be displayed in the classroom as well as the computer lab. You may even want a copy for your home computer. Students will be monitored while using the internet, both in the classroom and in the computer lab. Internet sites will be previewed by myself or the technology assistant. Students will not be allowed to just "surf." Lessons will be carefully planned. Good, solid teaching is curriculum driven, not technology driven. So as we cruise down the information superhighway, remember, curriculum is the engine, and technology is but one of the wheels. Please call me if you have a concern on this issue, or if you would like to volunteer to help with our computer lessons. Regards,
Mrs. Kilcoyne |
