WEBQUEST - BUYING A VEHICLE IN FRANCE

In this activity, you and a partner will surf a popular French vehicle maker's web site and gather the necessary information to make a purchase.  You will select the role of "customer" or "salesman" and, respectively, create a dialogue.  You will perform the dialogue in front of the class.

The Task

We will work on this activity for the next three days.  There is one major deliverable for each day:

Day One:  Choose roles, gather information, and create the dialogue between the "customer" and "car salesman".  Each group must turn in a rough draft of the dialogue at the end of class.

Day Two:  Incorporating the comments offered by the teacher, finish the final copy of the written dialogue - turn in for a grade.  Use the rest of the class time to practice the oral presentation.

Day Three:  Each group has 10 minutes to present the dialogue to the class.

Resources

If you need help with vocabulary, use Madame Ketler's French-English dictionaries, or use the translation software at http://translation2.paralink.com/.

The Process

1. Choose who will play the role of "car salesman" and who will play the role of "customer".

2. Enter www.renault.fr web site and click on "Que voulez vous conduire?".  Select the kind of car the customer wants to buy.  You may wish to click on "Recherechez une voiture neuve" for interactive shopping.  With this interactive guide, it is possible to select criteria for a vehicle, and then see a list of vehicles that meet the criteria.

3. Create a dialogue for the following mock situation:

The customer wants to buy a vehicle.  He/she has certain criteria in mind, but is not familiar with the vehicles that Renault currently offers.  The car salesman helps the customer to select a vehicle.  The purchase is made.

4. "Customer" and "car salesman" act out the dialogue for the class.  Be sure to include in the dialogue how much the vehicle will cost in Euro.  Also be sure to translate that amount in U.S. Dollars for the class.  To find out the conversion rate, go to http://www.xe.com/ucc/.

5. Take questions from the class about the vehicle that was chosen.

Learning Advice

One person should agree to be the "secretary" and write the rough draft of the dialogue.  Then, a neat and grammatically correct final copy should be written.  It would be a good idea to make two copies so that each person has a copy for the performance for the class.  It would also be a good idea to highlight your lines.  Turn in one copy to be graded - there is a possible 50 points for the written portion of this activity.

There is also an oral assessment for this activity - with a possible 50 points.  It will help if the print on the written copy is large and LEGIBLE!  Speak clearly!

Use ONLY FRENCH in the written and oral presentation.

Conclusion

By the end of this activity, you will be able to list the practical French vocabulary necessary to make a vehicle purchase (real world situation).  You will recognize the most famous brand of vehicle driven in France (cultural awareness).  You will improve your French speaking ability by practicing and presenting your dialogue (language proficiency).
