Elective # 7 – Translation

            In today’s society, not everyone speaks the same language.  Literally, with the United States policy of an “open door” not everyone speaks the same language.  Language is a barrier that can be hard to overcome without some type of translation.  The increased use of computer technology has given us the ability to take information from a foreign language and translate it to make it useful in the classroom.  .  Today we have many options on using translation in our classrooms.  Below are just a few examples of how to make every language barrier easy to overcome.  I have selected ones that are specific to my curriculum.

 

1.         Foreign language pen pals – Adding a pen pal activity to the curriculum is always beneficial to teaching students about life in a foreign country.  Through the use of translation on the net, I am able to have pen pals for my students. 

 

2.         Translation of recipes  – Finding and using recipes that originate from another country is hard to do in Advanced foods.  Now with the availability of translations on the net we are able to try recipes from a foreign country that we might not of been able to do without a translation.

 

3.         Translation of  newspapers  – Translating information found on newspapers from foreign countries would  add current event information to the students study of the country.

 

4.         Internet travel – Computer technology can be used in Advanced Foods to complete an internet travel to a foreign country.  With the use of translation on the net the students are not limited to just English speaking sites.  Foreign language sites are now more accessible and may include more updated and pertinent information.

 

5.         Translation of food names – For further consumption of information for the assigned country it would be beneficial to know food names in a foreign language.

 

6.         Restaurant Field trips  – Students would be able to translate a menu before going on the field trip.  This is a great benefit because the students would know what they are ordering before they reach the restaurant, thus no surprise foods.

 

 

 

 

 

Below is an example of translation.  I have used a recipe for Crockpot Crab Dip.

 

English

Crockpot Crab Dip

3/4 cup mayonnaise
1 8-oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened
2 Tbsp. apple juice
1 onion, minced
1 lb. frozen lump crabmeat, carefully picked over

Mix mayonnaise, cream cheese, and apple juice in medium bowl until blended. Place in 1 - 3 quart crockpot. Stir in onions and blend well. Gently stir in crabmeat. Cover crockpot and cook on LOW for 4 hours. Dip will hold for up to 2 hours, stirring occasionally. 8 servings

 

English to French

Crockpot Immersion de Crabe

3/4 mayonnaise de tasse

1 8-oz. Pkg. fromage frais, ramolli

2 jus de pomme Tbsp.

1 oignon, haché

1 livre. Morceau gelé crabmeat, soigneusement choisi

Mayonnaise de mélange, fromage frais et jus de pomme dans boule moyenne jusqu'à ne mélangé. Place dans 1 - 3 litres crockpot. Agitation dans oignons et mélange bien. Doucement agitation dans crabmeat. Couvrez crockpot et le cuisinier sur BAS pendant 4 heures. L'immersion se tiendra pour jusqu'à 2 heures, exaltantes de temps en temps. 8 portions

 

English to Spanish

Crockpot Pendiente de Cangrejo

3/4 mayonesa de taza

1 8 onz.. pkg. queso cremoso, ablandado

2 jugo de manzana Tbsp.

1 cebolla, picada

1 libra. terrón congelado crabmeat, con cuidado rebuscado

Mayonesa de mezcla, queso cremoso, y jugo de manzana en tazón medio hasta no mezclado. Lugar en 1 - 3 cuartos de galón crockpot. Movimiento en cebollas y mezcla bien. Con cuidado movimiento en crabmeat. Cubra crockpot y cocinero sobre BAJO durante 4 horas. La pendiente sostendrá para hasta 2 horas, conmovedoras de vez en cuando. 8 porciones
