Internet Filtering

Pros

Cons

Internet filtering protects children from viewing inappropriate websites.

The company that makes the software also makes the choice on what is filtered and what is not filtered.

Filtering information limits searching time, which limits time spent online.

Some internet filtering companies filter only inappropriate words not the text surrounding them.

Internet filters filter pornography and reduces a child’s chance of interacting with pedophiles.

Internet filtering companies do not share their blocked list with the user.

Filtering in the school system allows freer movement on the internet by students without the chance of contacting inappropriate information.

Internet filtering companies may block based on their own political agenda.  For example, Cyber sitter blocked Time magazine because they ran an article on internet filtering that included their name being on the blocked list.

Parental involvement is still one of the most important aspects of Internet filtering.  Parents might have a more detailed blocking list then the internet filtering company.

If a company changes their blocked list, the user must download the new version to get the upgraded blocking list.
