Elective #3 – newsletters
As a music teacher who incorporates technology in the classroom, I need to stay current with music policy issues. I particularly find music ownership and copyright laws to be difficult to understand. The following two newsletters help me with this task.
MusicFriends – This free quarterly newsletter is
sponsored by MENC, the National Association for Music Educators. Its main purpose is to raise awareness about
music education. It provides music
education news articles, interviews, resource links, music booster tips, and
game sources. It is brightly colored
with only a few well-placed graphics. It
is easy to read and navigate. Each page
has a link to MENC. Newsletter
subscription gives you full access to the MENC website, including members’ only
sections. This is a good source for
school music program advocates. Parents
can learn how to boost music program interest and advocate better funding
within their school district. Teachers
are given valuable resource information and fun games to enhance lesson plans.
Anyone interested in staying connected to national standards updates and
educational events will want to stay linked to this newsletter.

Future of Music Coalition – This free monthly newsletter is dedicated to educating musicians, educators, policy makers, and the general public about music and technology issues. This newsletter is packed with articles, resources, news briefs, events, and political venues. The print is small and graphics are not a priority but information abounds. The main menu is located on the left side of the page, is very visible with a red background, and allows ease in relocating your focus. There are so many links within the main body of the newsletter that you may want to grab a cup of hot chocolate for your perusal reading. Scroll down the right side menu for hot topic specifics. This site will help you to better understand topics such as royalties, copyright law, and media ownership. You will want to come back to the main site for valuable archived articles in the library.
