Let's Play Tennis

INTRODUCTION

Spring is in the air and so are tennis balls!!  That’s right, we are going to start playing tennis!  However, first things first, we need to learn a few things in order to enjoy playing tennis.  We will look at the aim, or object, of the game, scoring and rules.  We will also browse some of the celebrity sites like Andrea Agassi and the Williams Sisters.  There is also some additional information on the bottom for those of you looking for more tennis.

 

Tennis is a fun game played by some great players.  Let’s take a look at a few great tennis players that we all know.  Take a few minutes to browse their websites before we GET INTO THE GAME ourselves.

TASK

Now that you are done browsing, I am sure that you are ready to play tennis, right!  Well, you have to learn a few basic things before you can step out onto the court and have fun playing tennis.  Therefore, you will have to complete a worksheet using the links that follow.  This worksheet will help you understand the game of tennis.  The worksheet is divided into three sections – The Aim of the Game, Scoring, and Rules.  You will find these same sections below. 

 

PROCESS

While going through each section one at a time, you will fill out the worksheet with the appropriate answers.  Be careful with your answers!  Be sure to answer questions completely and with the appropriate detail in order to receive the best grade.  You must receive a ninety percent on this worksheet in order to step onto the court.  Do not skip around but go through each section as they are on this website.

Scoring

 

Now we will move onto the scoring.  This is where people get a little lost.  It is a scoring system unique to tennis and takes getting used to.  After studying the diagram of the tennis court below, click on it, and it will take you to a good explanation of the scoring system for tennis.  Pay close attention here, tennis scoring can be a little confusing.  Taking your time on the worksheet will help you better understand tennis scoring.

Rules

Rules! Rules!! And more RULES!!!  Yes, there are many rules of tennis just like in any other game.  Here is a link to provide you with a description of tennis rules as stated by the United State Tennis Association. Rules  We will not go too in-depth with all the rules.  However, I do want to you to learn the basics of proper tennis etiquette or otherwise known as The Code of Tennis.  For an explanation of tennis etiquette, click on the picture  to the left that displays what The Code of Tennis is not.

CONCLUSION

Before you can step on the court, you have to complete the worksheet and receive a ninety percent on your work.

How you will be grade is in the table below.  This is a great assignment to kick off our tennis unit.  Be sure to check your work for completeness and detail.
