Web Quest: A Web Quest: Road Trip WEST

This web quest serves as a tie-in to the book Walk Two Moons, by Sharon Creech.  The students take a road trip to one of three western destinations. They work in groups and take on roles as Driver/Navigator, Weather Watcher, Cultural Commentator and Recorder.

This site directs you to five on-line publications that educators will find useful in their quest to integrate technology into their lessons.  It details publications that Library Media Specialists might find most useful.

This site serves as an introductory primer to computer viruses.  Topics include the definition of a virus, how a computer can get a virus, how to avoid viruses, and hoax viruses.  A sample form letter is included that can be sent to those who send you hoax virus warnings.

This site explores how a school media center can put its “best foot forward” when putting up a web page.  There are things to avoid in hopes of making a useful site, and things to include that will make your cyber media center a place where the community will visit repeatedly.

This site introduces safety on the web.  The role and responsibility of teachers, parents and students is discussed.   A link to a sample letter to parents about what the web offers is provided.  The site also offers a safety education checklist that parents can use to help discuss issues with their children.  A second link to a sample contract between teacher and student is included.

This site provides information to students about the problem of pornography on the web.  It gives steps that can be taken to avoid being drawn into one of these sites, as well as steps to take should a pornography site by accessed.

This site reviews two excellent elementary school teacher web sites.  One teacher works in a multi-cultural district in California, the other works in the Stockbridge area of Massachusetts.  Both sites are excellent examples of how sites can extend assistance (and entertainment!)  to students and parents long after the regular school day ends.

This site provides students with a framework by which to judge if an Internet site is a “good” site or “bad” site.  Its purpose is to help students judge the validity of the information that is presented to them.

 

Drop-In Number 2:  Moons

This site provides teachers of young children a way to educate their students about the phases of the Moon.  The lesson is strongly tied into a read aloud of two children’s books, Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me and Many Moons.

This site provides an activity centered around the book Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George.  It gives students a close-up look at Alaska and asks them to think about the things they learned by writing a letter to their families about their “trip” North.

This site provides students with a short introduction to the poetry of Jack Prelutsky.  The students visit a site that gives biographical information about the poet; they get to experience listening to the author reading one of his poems and practice some word warm-up techniques helpful in writing poetry.

This site provides 5-6 grade students a chance to learn more about the theatre.  This is a pre-activity for the reading aloud of Susan Cooper’s book, King of Shadows, which tells the tale of a young actor who steps back into time to act in one of Shakespeare’s plays.
