Websites for Artists: List of art websites for high schools students and teachers.  They are designed to help students create art both in materials and ideas, promote the arts and help a student make a career in the arts. Course Module

 

Social Networking Sites: This is a course module designed to teach students about social networking sites, how they work and how useful they can be.  It lists several social networking sites for the student to investigate and then requires them to build a lesson around them. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/hughesm/course.htm  

 

Search Engines

Drop In Activities

 

Surrealism: This activity, the first drop in, is an introduction to surrealism, an art movement in the early twentieth century.  Surrealist painters focused on images from the subconscious mind and dreams. Romanticism: This activity, the second drop in, introduces a new art movement from the eighteenth century, romanticism.  It compares and contrasts romanticism and its predecessor, neo-classicism.  Students are given four artworks and they must decide which style it fits into. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/hughesm/romanticism.htm

 

Romanticism Answers:  These are the answers to the quiz in the romanticism drop in.  It also includes an example of the proper explanation for the identification.

Mastaba Tombs: This is the third drop in and it gives students a chance to tour an ancient Egyptian mastaba.  These tombs are the precursor to the Great Pyramids we associate with Egypt.  After touring the tomb, students must answer questions about what they have seen. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/hughesm/mastaba.htm

 

Cubism or Fauvism?: After impressionism, the art world began to split into two distinct sets of artists, those who focused on form and those who focused on color.  This split came to end head in the early twentieth century with two distinct art movements, cubism and fauvism.  This activity, the fourth drop in, compares the two movements and their founders. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/hughesm/cubeorfauve.htm

 

Facial Proportions:  The last drop inactivity focuses on the proportions of the human face.  There are links to websites and instructional videos.  Students are given a diagram of the face to record the measurements and tricks from the videos. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/hughesm/dropin5.htm

Effective Emails: This is a list of ten tips to help high school senior learn to write effective emails, as they get ready to enter the real world.  They are designed to help students be professional and knowledgeable in their correspondences. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/hughesm/effectivemails.htm

 

Internet Plagiarism: this site was designed to inform teachers of the scope of Internet plagiarism.  It includes several different ways students can use the Internet to plagiarize a paper. Color Theory: This presentation is an introduction to color theory.  It explains the basics of color theory (primary, secondary and tertiary colors) as well as different possible color schemes that can be used in paintings. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/hughesm/colortheory.htm

 

Clip Art:  This is a list and descriptions of five of the best websites for clip art.  Some offer free downloads and some charge a subscription fee.  A description is given of each site including what kind of clip art they specialize in (ex. animated, photography, or vector). http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/hughesm/clipart.htm

 

Art Lesson Plans: This is a list of five websites that focus on art lesson plans fro middle school or junior high students.  Lessons are free for teachers and focus on art history, methods, media, and emotional content in art. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/hughesm/artlesson.htm

 

Online Subscription Music: There are many services out there that allow people to download music.  This is a list of my three best online music services based on price, available music, and ease of use and type of device the music will work with.  A lesson plan utilizing songs downloaded from the Internet to introduce abstract art is also included. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/hughesm/onlinemusic.htm

 

Internet Citations: After reviewing the sites in the activity I chose Write Source and the Indiana University Libraries to recommend to my students.  The review focuses on MLA style format and the example websites are in MLA style. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/hughesm/citations.htm

 

Learning Games: This is a list of the top three learning games sites for elementary age children in four different content areas: reading/language arts, math, science and social studies.
