Pornography

The number of people using the internet has been increasing exponentially every year ever since it became available to the general public.  Like anything else in this world, when more and more people start using something there will be people trying to take advantage of everyone else.  Pornography is a perfect example of this.  There are people who are putting the pornographic sites on the internet and then trying to trick people into going to them by using legitimate sounding URLs.  These are not people who are just trying to make an honest dollar.  Instead, they are being very devious in getting unsuspecting people to come to their sites.  Once the people are there they can steal information off of their computer and sell it to other people for money.  It is very important then to try and stop these people from being able to take advantage of us like they do.

The first and easiest way to try and prevent accessing these sites is to be cautious of which sites you go to.  In the beginning it is important to only access sites that you know are safe.  If you are unsure, you can ask your teacher and hopefully they should be a little more knowledgeable on which sites are good to go to.  After using the internet for awhile and becoming familiar with it and its contents, you will be better and judging which sites are safe and which aren’t.

If the unfortunate happens and you do access and pornography site accidentally, don’t panic.  The first thing to do is to find either your teacher or the librarian, whoever is monitoring the computer lab at that time, and explain to them exactly what happened.  Do not walk off and try and find them, though, because the pornography is still very viewable on the screen.  They should either take care of the situation or walk you through how to handle it.  If nobody is around to help, the following guide should work you through the problem.  Make sure you write down the site and explain the situation to your teacher or librarian when you are able to talk to them.

Start by simply trying to close the window by clicking on the X in the right corner.  If this doesn’t work or another pornography site pops up, keep trying to close the windows manually.  If for some reason the windows are unable to close, try shutting down the internet browser by clicking on X in the very top right corner or right click on the toolbar and select close.  If the computer freezes up at this point, click ctrl-alt-delete to bring up the task manager (this only works on PCs).  Once the task manager is up, click on the internet browser to highlight it and then click end task.  This should cause the internet browser to shut down, but in the very unfortunate incident that it doesn’t simply turn off the computer by any means necessary, including using the power button or unplugging it.  Hopefully you will never have to experience this, but if you do come across a situation like this simply follow this guide and it should work you through it.
