RE:  Safety on the Internet

We will be using computers in our classroom and in the computer lab as much as possible this school year!  Some of the activities we will complete will require using sites from the Internet.  There is important information I would like to share with you concerning some sites that have educational names in their address, but really are not for children.

Students

If you are in school and see something on your computer screen that should not be there, here is what you do:

1.      Turn off your monitor by pushing in the circle button on the monitor, below the screen.

2.    Tell the adult in charge, or helper, that you are in a site that is a mistake.

3.     Go to another computer, if possible, or team up with another student to finish your work.

Parents

If you are at home and this situation happens, you could try the tips listed below and found at http://oii.org/html/mousetrap.html.

Method 1:

Hold down the ALT key and press F4.  This closes the window. In the case of multiple

windows popping up, you can do this repeatedly and rapidly.

Method 2:

   1) Look for is a button that is offering to sell the domain name.

   2) Click on it and a screen will come up with a form to fill out.

   3) DON'T FILL ANYTHING OUT

   4) At this point, you have foiled the mouse trap.

Close the browser using X in the upper right corner of the window.

Don't use the Back Button.  Just close all windows and start again.

a form on its Web site (http://www.ftc.gov) and a toll-free number
