Bike Safety

Introduction:

Do you wear your bike helmet each time you ride your bike?  Have you seen children riding bikes without their helmet?    Do you know why you need to wear a helmet when you ride your bike?

Information:

You will explore a few sites on the Internet to gain information about bike safety.  You will be able to have some of your own bike safety questions answered as you travel through these sites.

Activity:

          1.  Go to http://www.bhsi.org/safekids.htm Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute and click on “Safe Kids Press Release” to read about bike safety.  Take notes by creating an organizer, of your choice, to record reasons why helmets are necessary to wear when riding a bike.

          2.  Go to http://umdsp.umd.edu/~bleau/bike-laws.html to read about Maryland’s Bicycle Laws.  Again, take notes of any facts you would like to remember about wearing a helmet.

(Found at:  http://www.massbike.org/lawlegis/   MassBike Bike Laws and Legislation is a site all states’ legislation for bicycles.)

3.Use information from both sites to create a bike safety poster to share with fellow second graders.

3.                             Use the rubric to guide your work on the poster.
