TRANSLATION

Translation of internet documents or any print documents has become increasingly important.  We live in a world where information has no boundaries.  Access to information should not be stopped because of the inability to read the native language.  There are numerous translation sites available.

Reasons for using translation in an instructional setting:

  1. Research – While researching for a paper; the student may come across a document that is in another language.  I personally could have used this while researching the Black Hand in college.  I had received a document through interlibrary loan that was in German.  It had the potential to be a great source but I had no way to translate the information.  There are numerous primary source documents that could be used by students.
  2. ESOL students – Our schools include students whose first language is not English.  As new students from different countries arrive in our schools; this might be an appropriate way to communicate with the students.  I could have used this while teaching ESOL Modern World History.  I might have been able to help my Pakistani students even more.  It would have helped communicate directions and answers.
  3. On-line Newspapers – Our students should be more aware of the world around them.  As current events are important in a Social Studies classroom; this would be a good tool to use in seeing how other nations in the world view the foreign policy of the United States.  Or how other countries view the United Nations or the World Bank.  Students would be able to read newspapers from Russia, China, or just about anywhere else in the world.
  4. Letters Home to Parents – Many schools are already translating their letters from English into a foreign language when sending communication home to parents.  The high school I teach in is currently translating letters into Spanish.  Going back to the idea of our nation as multinational it is important to keep all parents informed of what occurs in your classroom or in your school.
  5. Foreign Language Course – This could be used as a check for students once the have written sentences or paragraphs in their classes.  Students would be able to check their work.
  6. Communicating with other students around the world.

World War I lasted from 1914 to 1918.  It involved almost all European nations, the United States, and Japan.  Hopes for a quick victory faded as trench warfare tied down armies.  New weapons such as poison gas, tanks, and submarines were used with deadly effect.

Hoffnungen für einen schnellen Sieg verbließen, während Grabenkriegsführung hinunter Armeen band. Neue Waffen wie Giftgas, -behälter und -unterseeboote wurden mit tödlichem Effekt benutzt.
