Copyright Elective

1.  Mr. Jamweimer has violated copyright laws when he paid to download software and shared it with the school.  By purchasing the software, he is licensed to use it.  However, he does not own the rights to the software.  Generally in this situation, the materials that you purchase and download are for your personal use only.  The software company could sue Mr. Jamweimer for copyright violations.  The school and the students are using their software without paying for the license to use it.  The company could claim the right to be compensated, even though Mr. Jamweimer only had the students’ best interest in mind and was not trying to make money or exploit the company in any way.

2.  Mrs. Urdvarday may be in violation of copyright laws.  She needs to make sure that the site where she obtained those MP3 files is a legitimate site.  There are many file sharing sites that contain pirated music.  Therefore, it is unlawful for Mrs. Urdvarday to copy and distribute these files.  Before using the materials in class, she should seek permission from the copyright owner.  If she paid for the files, she can use them.  However, she may not make copies and distribute them to the students.  The students would be able to copy the files and distribute them without the owner being compensated.
