Pornography Elective

Pornography has become a huge issue for educators using the Internet in the classroom. Many Cyber squatters have taken over URL’s that used to be for educational purposes and have turned them in to money making vehicles for pornography. Most cyber squatters take over the URL’s and hold them hostage in an attempt to make money. They are hoping to get paid for the URL by educators that wish to reclaim the URL.

Accidents are liable to happen when surfing the Internet, filters are not perfect, but when accidents do occur, don’t panic. Do your research to find appropriate web sites before linking to them. If you do find yourself in a pornography site, don’t start rushing to close windows or you will likely be surprised to find even more windows popping up. You may not have control of your mouse. This is called a “mouse trap”. Below is an emergency action plan to follow if you accidentally access a pornography site and can’t get out.

ACTION PLAN FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

1. Don’t panic, this is what they want. If you start trying to close windows more may pop up.

2. Immediately turn off the computer monitor and call for the teacher.

3. If you are at home and no adult is available to assist you, try pressing Alt F4, this may work.

4. Watch out for the Look for button, it is a button offering to sell domain names on some pornography sites.

· If you click on it a screen will come up with a form to fill out.

· Don’t fill out the form.

· At this point you have tricked the mouse trap.

5. Close the browser by using the X in the upper right corner of the page.

6. Don’t use the back button.

7. At this point, close all windows, and shutdown the computer, and begin again.

8. If this does not work, turn off the monitor and wait for an adult to assist you.

9. Tell them that you have accidentally accessed a pornography site and cannot get out.

10. Explain the process above that did not work.

If we are more aware of the issues that can creep up when using the Internet we will be better prepared to deal with them.
