Best Search Engines

Below are the search engines I found to be the most helpful for finding information.

General Search Engines

Google

This is the search engine I use most frequently and by far the best site I have found.  The page is clean and easy to read without any distracting clip art or ads.

Yahoo

Since my e-mail account is set up in Yahoo, I tend to use this site often, although less often than Google.  This site is easy to use and fairly organized.

News Search Engines

Google News

Like Google, the Google News search engine is easy to use.  You are able to enter a keyword and browse categories.  The site’s main page opens with top news stories, with blurbs and links to click on for the entire story.  The main page is also broken down into categories including World and US News, entertainment, business and sports, to name a few.

Alta Vista News

This site allows you to run a keyword search for news and supplies content from major news partners like the New York Times and The Washington Post.  The site also offers drop-down options under the search box, which makes it easy to narrow results by news topic.

Kid Safe Search Engines

Ask Jeeves for Kids
Ask Jeeves For Kids
is a kid safe search engine where you can type in a question and Jeeves will try to find the best web page to answer the question.  It also provides links to study tools, fun and games and news resources.  At Ask Jeeves for Kids, any site that is on the CyberPatrol block should not be listed.

Yahooligans
Yahooligans is designed to be the website for kids; it is set up to resemble Yahoo.  The site is both educational and fun.  Links include games, music, TV, science, astrology and animals.  Unlike Yahoo, this site does not bring back any match on the web, it only matches sites from within Yahooligans.

Meta Search Engines

Dogpile
Dogpile is a metasearch site that displays results from each search engine individually.  You can click on a specific category, such as web pages or news and type in what you’re looking for; the site then displays all sites in the category.

Vivisimo
Vivisimo is another great metasearch site.  Simply type in the search word or term and Vivisimo will display matching sites organized in Clustered Results.  Very organized and easy to use!

Shopping Search Engines

Froogle
Another great search engine from Google!  This site is great because it’s a comparison search engine (great for bargain shoppers!)  Products are listed in general categories and then broken down into more specific categories.  There’s a lot of clicking involved, but overall, easy (and fun) to use!

BizRate
This site allows you to search for products from online vendors.  Products are broken down into general departments (more choices than Froogle) and then more specific choices.  You can use BizRate to
compare prices, product reviews and store ratings to always get the best deal.
