Parents and Students

Checklist for computer use - Here are the rules and a checklist for using the science computer lab. Students and parents are required to read these rules and sign a computer use agreement (in the classroom packet). Each time that students use a computer in the science lab they are required to follow the checklist.

Cheating/Plagiarism Policy- Parents,This is a copy of the cheating policy recognized in my classroom. The following rules appear on every exam and are posted in my classroom. When you receive the classroom rules packet to sign on the first day of school there will be a copy of these rules for you to review and sign. Please take special note to the plagiarism section at the bottom. Your child will be using the Internet several times to do research and to turn in projects. Please discuss the importance of documenting all works used to create projects, including any pictures or artwork that is used. All resources must be cited! Included are sites for information on citing Internet sources and ways to avoid plagiarism.

Take the Hemisphere Inventory Test - In general the left and right hemispheres of your brain process information in different ways. We tend to process information using our dominant side. However, the learning and thinking process is enhanced when both side of the brain participate in a balanced manner. This means strengthening your less dominate hemisphere of the brain. Read the information on processing styles that are characteristically used by your right or left brain hemisphere to help you understand how your brain processes information.

Phineas Gage - In September 1848, Phineas Gage a young railroad construction supervisor in the Rutland and Burland Railroad site, while preparing a powder charge for blasting a rock, inadvertently tamped a steel rod into the hole. The rod entered his head through his left cheek, destroyed his eye, traversed the frontal part of the brain, and left the top of the skull at the other side. Amazingly, he was talking and could walk. How could this be? A thorough explanation and 3D computer images show how the tamping rod entered his head.

The ECG graph - As the heart undergoes depolarization and repolarization, the electrical currents that are generated spread not only within the heart, but also throughout the body.  This electrical activity generated by the heart is generally measured by an array of electrodes placed on the body surface and the resulting tracing is called an electrocardiogram (ECG, or EKG).  A "typical" ECG tracing is shown.  The different waves that comprise the ECG represent the sequence of depolarization and repolarization of the atria and ventricles.  Predict how the graph would look if the patient were to undergo some cardio-abnormality.

Evolution and Theories of Early Man - This lesson provides activities and on predominately 2 theories which attempt to explain the migratory patterns and the consequential evolution of hominids to modern man; "The Multi-Regional Hypothesis" and the "Out of Africa Theory." By performing the activities of these 3 assignments you will be able to determine which theory you best support. Includes a mapping activity, a TIME article and an online video.

Webquest ( Developing a Dichotomous Key from Hominoid Skulls) -Suppose you were on an archeological dig. You uncover what appears to be a hominoid skull. ("Hominoid" is the collective term for apes and humans.) It is your job to figure out what kind of skull it is. But how? Each hominoid can be identified by specific characteristics. As hominoids split off from hominids which then evolved into modern man, certain trends in  skull features have been documented that will allow for aproper identification. In this activity you will go through a series of assignments that will lead you to understand how to identify those characteristics and trends hominid evolution.

Carrers in Science Project - You will be researching one career in science--any career.  Once you have fully investigated the topic, you will create a help wanted ad to illustrate what you have learned about the job. Once the project is completed it will be displayed so that others may gather information about your career.

Disease Pamphlet - During this course we have used principals of anatomy and physiology to determine the nature of particular diseases. Now you will research a communicable disease and create a pamphlet that would enlighten the public and provide specific information about the disease.
