OBJECTIVE 4

Stimulating Learning Environment

ARTIFACT: Special Needs Addressed in the Media Center (PowerPoint)

REFLECTION:

Can the LMS cultivate a stimulating learning environment to all students? All students in the learning community deserve a positive media center experience. Building a relationship with the Special Education department will address a portion of the learning community that is often forgotten. After observing a Special Educator and her classes for 15 hours, I found that the media center, although used regularly by this group, was not in tune with their specific needs. This PowerPoint is a valuable tool to share at a media specialist in-service to address a sometimes forgotten topic. It provides a framework for addressing the needs of our special education community by suggesting appropiate resources. With it, the expertise of the special education department can provide the media center and the school with a wealth of information about the various needs of their students. The ensuing changes and accomodations can be appropriate and appreciated by the entire learning community. Whether it includes altering the furniture arrangement for those who need more space, purchasing larger computer monitors or specialized keyboards, or even maintaining a larger collection of easy to read and audio materials, the media center will become a stimulating learning environment for every visitor. As a media specialist, I plan to meet with the special education department monthly to address the changing needs of our students. The resulting awareness and adaptation will benefit all students in the media center.
