Elective 5

Elective 5 --Worksheets for Instruction

Assignment Create a link list of 10 sites that deal specifically with your subject and level. The links need to go directly to the level on the site where the best material for your needs is located. The list should include listings by category, a brief note about what is available on the link and a visible URL. Post the file to your web site and place a link on your index page

Literature:

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry:

bullet

This is a web page from the edhelper.com web site.  The site goes to a page that links to chapter by chapter activities.  This book is a long book for many students to read and by breaking the activities down into two chapters each, it makes the book more accessible.  For every two chapters, there is a quiz (in .pdf form) and a tool that you can use to edit the quiz and customize it for your own classroom, and there are multiple vocabulary exercises (e.g. crossword puzzles, word search, etc.)   There are also links to a book report, a final quiz, and some extension activities.  The only catch with this web site is that you have to become a registered user to access any of the documents--but, that just means giving your e-mail.

The Hobbit:

bullet

This site is maintained by the same people as above.  Again, a long book is broken down into sections of three chapters each.  Each section has a quiz, some discussion questions, and some vocabulary words.  Many of the pages can be customized, especially the quiz pages.

There are many other books maintained by this web site.  Some that I have taught include  Holes, Maniac Magee, and Walk Two Moons

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets:

bullet

This page is a .pdf document that is a three page handout/ worksheet about this particular Harry Potter novel chapers 1-7.  There are other .pdf's  for the other chapters.  The handout has a number of discussion questions from all levels of thinking--plot summary to analysis.  And, at the end there is a graphic organizer of plot information.

Robinson Crusoe:

bullet

This site has a 102 page word document that contains an entire teacher's guide.  There are other novels on this web page.  The novel guide has many pages of handouts and worksheets.  Plus, there is an extensive thematic examination.

Lord of the Flies:

bullet

This page is the discoveryschool.com page on the novel Lord of the Flies.  It has an entire novel unit on the page.  There are vocabulary words, discussion questions, objectives, and extension activities.  There are no hand outs or reproducibles, but the lesson is very good.

Grammar:

Nouns:

bullet

This is another site maintained by edhelper.com.  There are actually web pages for all eight parts of speech.  But, I will only review one, so that I will get a chance to review more sites.  This page is broken down into eight sections.  Each section covers something different with nouns.  There is a review section, a section on plural nouns, and many sections on noun identification.  Each of the worksheets was good.  However, you must register to read and print the worksheets.

Writing:

Cause and Effect:

bullet

This site takes you through a whole lesson on cause and effect.  It is so good that all you would have to do is hook up your computer to the TV or digital projector and you have a lesson for you.  The page linked shows the beginning page defining cause.  The next page defines effect.  And it continues to build with a good explanation of a cause effect relationships.  There are some downloadable worksheets, but you have to register for a free seven day trial of the web page.

Language Arts:

Persuasion:

bullet

This site gives a great lesson on persuasion in advertising.  This fits in well with my propaganda theme in the Animal Farm unit.  The page is very rudimentary.  There is a form at the bottom that is printable, but I probably would need to be cutted and pasted to a word document to be useful.

Reading:

Predicting:

bullet

This site has a three page printable lesson on predicting.  There is a one page story, a one page worksheet asking predicting questions based on the story, and a one page worksheet.  It is a high quality lesson.
