General Search Engines

Google- This user friendly search engine holds more than 8 billion URL's.  Each listing provides a brief excerpt from the cite. The user can quickly determine each cite's relevance to the search.

Ask Jeeves- This search engine responds to your queries with a list of  Web sites as expected. However, it also provides a "related topics" list along the right margin that the user might find helpful. In lieu of an excerpt, a brief summary of the site is given.

Honorable Mention

Yahoo! Search- Like Google, each listing provides an excerpt and highlights the search words found in the article. However, the search words proximity to each other within the cite isn't taken into account. This could potentially lead the user away from the intended subject. Some screens can also be overwhelming with a lot  of small print originating from left and right margins.

News Search Engines

Yahoo News- This web site strikes a nice balance between text and space. It provides late breaking news coverage and search options. The user can select a topic from the menu bar or enter a specific subject. A right side menu bar allows the reader to view  the top stories from several different news organizations.

Google News and MSNBC  Newsbot- Similar to Yahoo News, both these sites offer up to the minute news coverage, a menu bar, and a search window. However, their layouts are extremely busy and overflowing with text and graphics.

One news search engine
I do not recommend is AltaVista News.  Its Web page is lackluster and uninspired.

KidsWeb- Designed for use by children in preschool to 6th grade,  this site is  very user friendly.  Children can research a topic, enjoy interactive games, or  find new arts and crafts activities to try at home.

Travelocity- Similar to Expedia Travel in its range of services, this site will also provides the traveler a one stop shopping experience. However, this site doesn't project the same upbeat and fresh image that one experiences when visiting Expedia.

Shopping Search Engines

BizRate- This site allows the user to shop for items from hundreds of online stores.  One noteworthy feature is a comparison price chart which lets the user see the price of a specific item at multiple stores. Stores also receive a rating from previous customers.

DealTimeWith many of the same attributes as BizRate, this site is almost comparable. However, it proves to be slightly more difficult to navigate.
