A letter to the parents:
Dear Parents,
The Internet is a valuable teaching and learning tool and
contains an enormous amount of information. There is also information available
that children should not be able to access.
Our school has an internal filtering system in place so
that much of that harmful information cannot be retrieved by the students.
Unfortunately, some information will seep through the filter. As the classroom
teacher, I will do everything humanly possible to monitor the students as they
explore the web. We will remain on educational sites only. The students will
never be allowed to use the computer unless an adult is present in the room.
There will be no chatting among students nor will the students be allowed to
enter any “live chat rooms”.
Please
talk to your child about the dangers of divulging any personal information
about themselves to a stranger. A stranger, is a stranger, is a stranger,
whether they are a in a mall or in a live chat room. Your child should not put
him or her self in danger by going into such rooms. Stress the use of common
sense as you would in any other new or unfamiliar situation. If it does not
feel right, it probably is not.
Your
reiteration of these cautions at home as well as my discussions and monitoring
at school will hopefully allow students to use the Internet for all the right
reasons. Safety is our main priority.
Thank you
