In order to make an informed decision about which
game I wanted to become an expert in, I visited all three web sites. First, I
went to Yahoo. I liked what I saw but wanted to check out the other two sites.
The Multi-player Online Directory had a black screen and the words did not
appear clear to me. The font appeared smaller and I dismissed this site. Then I
went to Vinco Online Games. I did not know what most of the games were and I
was not interested in Tourneys or playing for Tokens. Therefore, back to Yahoo
I went.
It took me about 10 minutes to get all logged in. It
seemed that my ID name (the first 3 I chose) were very popular. Finally, I got
in. I decided to play the harmless game of dominoes. I was surprised that at
9:30 pm on a Friday night so many people would be sitting at their computers
playing games with total strangers. Either they are all taking online
telecommunications classes and doing research or they lead very boring lives.
Anyway, I joined a “table” as they are called in the domino world. (The Stapes
Table). There were three other “people” there. While we played, we could also
chat (not an easy feat for the world’s slowest typist). First,
silverangelsweetie44 asked me my asl? What is that, I thought to myself? So, I
asked. Turns out it is my age, sex and location. I must be careful about the
Internet people I thought, so I lied. Just a small one-about my age. I ended up
playing with a 13-year-old girl from Arizona, a 63-year-old woman from West
Virginia and a 37-year-old male from New York. So, there we were-a sorry bunch
of misfits playing dominoes on a Friday night.
I played several rounds and eventually got the hang of
it. You had to try to plan your moves carefully so you did not have to get an
extra domino from the “boneyard”. (The boneyard was like the pick up pile). I
won one round-not quite sure how- and said my good byes at about 10:00pm.
In the name of research, I went back to the dominoes game
section of Yahoo on Saturday afternoon. This time I was the host in the Incus
room at Table 31. Several came and went (joined, then left) but finally
Sheik3170 joined me and we played a rousing six games. I lost every one of
them. I was disappointed, to say the least, and I really wanted to win, but
enough was enough. I asked Sheik if he/she (didn’t ask the asl) knew a trick or something because I was
pretty bad, but he/she just said it’s the luck of the dominoes you are given.
So there is my account of online games. I know I only
played twice (and the same game at that) but I spent enough time to know it’s
not for me. I would rather play a game, be it cards, a board game, and yes,
even dominoes, with real live people than with “computer people”. I am sure
these games have their place (ask any teenager or college student) but as a
40-something mother of two with a full time teaching job, they are not for me.
