Modifications
Visual Impairment
- The
software could use audio equipment, so the student could use the computer
through his or her auditory senses.
- The
software could use very bright colors. Some children with visual
impairment are not completely blind and they can pick up objects and words
that appear in very bright colors.
- The
keyboard or other equipment necessary for the instruction could provide
brail on the keys for the student.
- The
use of microphones and speakers could allow for the visually impaired
student to communicate with other children across the web through auditory
senses.
- The
student could be provided with extra time to complete web based
instruction, due to that fact that he or she has a disability.
- The
use of tapes could help assist visually impaired children complete web
based instruction. The tapes would be nice because they could guide the
student through auditory stimulation.
- The
teacher could help the visually impaired child or the teacher could also
assign a student in the classroom to help aid the visually impaired
student.
- The
teacher could provide the student with different material that would be
easier for the visually impaired student to complete.
- Augmentative
communication devices could be used to help the visually impaired child
complete the web based instruction.
- The
amount of assignments expected to be completed by the individual could be
reduced in order not to overwhelm the visually impaired student.
Hearing Impaired
- Make some of the web based instruction
in large groups. Children with hearing impairments learn very well from
watching others.
- Do not use any audio equipment with
the web based learning. Provide subtitles for any sections that may be
instructed through the use of audio devices.
- Assign a child to work with the
hearing impaired student. The use of a peer guide could definitely help to
increase the quality of web based instruction that is completed.
- As the teacher, help the child
yourself. Instructing the child yourself and physically showing them what
is expected may help to increase the quality of web based instruction.
- Provide an interpreter for the
student. The use of an interpreter will most definitely help the child who
is hearing impaired succeed in the classroom.
- Allow the student some extra time to
complete assignments. The use of extra time on web based learning can
definitely help the disabled child produce more accurate results.
- Reduce the amount of work expected.
Decrease the work load so you can receive more accurate work. The
reduction in work load will also help the student to comprehend more
materials.
- Provide repetitions and review for the
student. The use of reviews and constant repetitions will ensure that the
student is grasping the concept of the web based instruction.
- Provide frequent and immediate
feedback. The use of feedback will let the child know what he or she is
doing right and what he or she is doing wrong. Feedback will help the
student to learn and achieve at higher levels.
- Provide many visual aids during the
instruction. The use of visual aids is very important when working with
children who are hearing impairment. Hearing impaired children learn much
more when they can watch other people and visually see what is expected.
