Elective Activity – Worksheets

Grade: Elementary Grades 1-3

Subject: English – Vocabulary, Spelling, Writing …

With the overwhelming amount of material on the web regarding “worksheets”, I have narrowed down to a list of ten top sites I thought were the best.  As an elementary teacher in English the following sites were ones I thought most helpful. They provide existing or “unique to you” worksheets.  I have included for each site a description of what you will find there and any unique features.  For some of the sites I also give you my favorite worksheet picks.

1. http://www.edhelper.com/vocabulary_grade2.html - This site has a lot of options of activities to help with vocabulary they include: reproducible worksheets, definitions, word find, crossword, matching, sentences, synonyms, multiple choice and scrambled words.  You can also create your own worksheet!

http://www.edhelper.com/spelling_grade2.html - This is the same main site, but it deals with spelling. There are word searches, writing activities, crosswords, fill ins and more.

2. http://www.tampareads.com/wrksheet/index-2.htm - This site is full of worksheets aimed at a second grade level.  The worksheets help with reading vocabulary.  The use of memory, letter scrabbles and sentence practices are how they are accomplished.

Favorite pick - http://www.tampareads.com/writing/  sentence writing using vocabulary

3. http://worksheets.teach-nology.com/language_arts/vocab/second/ - Geared for a second grade level, this language arts area of this site gives you the choice of- alphabetic order, cryptogram, handwriting, missing letter(s), vocabulary quiz, word chop, word scramble, word search.

4. http://www.readinga-z.com/newfiles/levels_descriptions/levelkbooks.html - This site is a reading site and becoming a subscribed member I would suggest for the most material.  I have geared this page to a 7-8 year old reading level.

Favorite pick - http://www.readinga-z.com/pages/ra-z/worksheets/k/raz_lk02_howzebras_wksh.pdf  a problem / solution and a syllable activity

5. http://www.tut-world.com/p2_eng.htm - This site has a variety of English areas for second grade level, including – vocabulary, grammar, sentence construction and cloze passage.  The comprehension area is too difficult I think.

6. http://www.bogglesworld.com/worksheets.htm - This is a colorful site with many interesting activities.  The grade range is large though.  You need to look for those activities for your level.  For the grades I teach, I would use the sections- expressions, vocab, theme and word searches.

Favorite pick - http://bogglesworld.com/files/easy_wordsearch_color.jpg - color word

Favorite pick - http://bogglesworld.com/files/SeasonVocabulary.jpg a fun “seasons” vocabulary sheet.

7. http://canadaonline.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tampareads.com%2Fphonics%2Fwhereis%2Findex.htm – This site is Canadian based and works with phonics worksheets.  "Phonics" refers to knowing the sound made by a letter or letter group.  I have listed several other pages I liked from this same site.

9. http://school.discovery.com/teachingtools/worksheetgenerator/ This site gives you the option to use free worksheets in “worksheets to go” or use the “create a worksheet” area.  The examples are a help in the “create a worksheet” area.  This site doesn’t give the option for grade, so all activities are not for my level.

10. http://www.awesomeclipartforkids.com/worksheetsindex.html - Create your own worksheet on this site.  You can make a custom word search or crossword puzzle.  Themes for these include animals, holidays, educational and weather.
