Drop in #5 - Piet Mondrian and his Artwork

Art / Grade: 9-12

Topic: Piet Mondrian

Introduction:  Yesterday in class we learned about acrylic paint.  We have been used various types of paint during the year and with each type we study an artist who also used it.  Well, here I am going to mix it up – literally!  The Dutch artist we are going to study used oil paints.  His name is Piet Mondrain.  His abstract painting style he referred to as “neoplasticism”.  The geometric motifs he used in his artwork lend themselves well for us to reproduce in acrylic.  You will view his work, read about him and create your own cyber Mondrain.  You will then reproduce this with acrylic paint.

Activity:

  1. Learn about Mondrain and view his artwork.  Go through and read the sections titled: introduction, studies, and career.  The section labeled “details” is optional reading, it is very technical! http://www.artmuseums.harvard.edu/mondrian/

  1. Create your own cyber Mondrian-like painting. Read the directions carefully! This page will let you make your own cyber-painting.  When you have finished your artwork, print out two copies.  http://www.stephen.com/mondrimat/index2.html

  1. Translate your cyber Mondrain to your canvas.  Use a copy of your cyber      Mondrian, carbon paper and a pencil to trace the outline onto your canvas.  Use masking tape to mask off the area you want to paint.  Then start painting with your acrylic paint.  Once an area is dry, mask off the next area and paint.  Continue this process until you are completely finished.  Remember you can paint two or more areas as long as they don’t touch.  Also you must use the color palette Mondrian used.
