Field Trip Elective

Art class / Grade 9-12

Did you ever want to go somewhere that was too far away or too expensive to get to?  Well here we are.  It is the end of the year.  We have all worked hard and we deserve a field trip and one that you can choose where to go to.  I have picked four destinations that have to do with topics we discussed this year.  Your job is to pick which one you think is best.

Check out The National Gallery!

This is The National Gallery’s website.  By going here you can select the “online tour” you want to go to.  There are collections of painting, sculpture, decorative arts, and graphic arts.

Look through this page and see where you want to go. http://www.nga.gov/onlinetours/onlinetr.htm

I would suggest we view the French painter’s of the 19th Century, since we studied some of them this year. http://www.nga.gov/collection/gallery/french19.htm

The Impressionism site gives you an overview of many artists including Monet.  This tour is complete with an audio section for select paintings. http://www.nga.gov/collection/gallery/gg86/gg86-main1.html

“American Impressionism and Realism” is a variation of one of the topics we covered this year.  View art from American Impressionistic artists here. http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/horo_remin1.htm

The most comprehensive area is the Virtual Exhibition Tours. As you "walk" through these QuickTime VR tours of NGA exhibitions, you can select specific works of art for larger image views, close-up details, streaming audio commentary, and information about the object.  I thought the tour of Van Gogh was great!   Check it out! http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/gogh/html/nonplug/room1-main.htm

What about the Metropolitan Museum, should we go here?

The Metropolitan Museum site has a variety of artwork for us to look at.  Artwork is not only that that is on display at the Metropolitan, it is art from around the world.  I liked the special exhibitions area that featured: “Thomas Eakins” and the “The Age of Impressionism” and “Gauguin”.  All of these exhibits are currently at the Metropolitan Museum. Unfortunately they didn’t update the Impressionism area and only Eakin’s and Gauguin’s paintings are available for us to see. http://www.metmuseum.org/special/index.asp

Thomas Eakin (1844-1916) was thought to be a brilliant painter, but also a photographer.  He was most noted for his interpretation of the human figure.  In the Eakin’s exhibit, I especially like the painting of the rower.  http://www.metmuseum.org/special/Thomas_Eakins/survey_more.htm

Paul Gauguin’s exhibit at the Metropolitan marks one of the first times he has been the sole figure to be exhibited.  Paul Gauguin was a French painter and lived from 1844-1916.  The exhibit features art from all stages during his career. View his work and read more about the artwork and this exhibit. http://www.metmuseum.org/special/gauguin_ny/lure_images.htm

The American Museum of Photography could be fun?

Did you ever wonder about how photography was started…how the first pictures looked…what people took pictures for and why?  This site of the American Museum of Photography gives a historical look back on American Photography.  All of the photographs were taken before any of you were born.  Look through and see how history was documented through photography and how a normal picture can be so awesome if the images composition is considered.  Be aware of the different times pictures were taken and what type of camera was used.  Also note the sepia tones, black and white photographs that we can recreate even today.  This is a virtual museum that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Have fun, read, look around and explore! http://photographymuseum.com/guide.html

Ahhhhh Monet, my favorite artist.  What about going to see one of his exhibits in Boston?

The Boston Museum of Fine Arts offers a great on-line tour the “Monet in the Twentieth Century”.  With over 80 paintings you will be able to view and hear about Monet’s paintings during the period of 1899-1926.  Monet was most noted for being a leader of the Impressionism movement.  This shouldn’t be any news to all of you, since we spent an entire unit on Impressionism and one lesson was on Monet.  Take a closer look at more of his art and listen to what others had to say about him.  http://www.boston.com/mfa/monet/

Want more on Monet, look at Monet’s Gallery.  This site lists paintings you can view-

So where did you choose?  Let’s go check it out together!
