Web Drop in #3- Calligraphy

Grade Level: 9-12

Background: At this point in the year my class has been introduced to “Lettering” as a unit plan.  One of the most enjoyable lessons taught was calligraphy.  The class learned how to use a fountain pen to create letters.  They practiced the alphabet but that is as far as we went.  I decided because of their enthusiasm for this lesson that I would develop it further.  So here we are.

Introduction: What is calligraphy?  What have artists done with their calligraphy? We will be viewing different styles and create a project using it.

Activities:

  1. Read about calligraphy.  This site will give you a definition of the word, talk about the art form it is considered to be, and give you a brief history of it.

2. Look at the examples of several artists and how they used calligraphy and the alphabet to create artwork.

            Artist - Julie Gray http://www.cecilia-letteringart.com/alphabetforest/juliegray01.htm

Artist - Karen Ter Haar http://www.cecilia-letteringart.com/alphabetforest/karenterhaar02.htm

Artist - Gemma Black http://www.cecilia-letteringart.com/alphabetforest/gemmablack01.htm

  1. Using the examples above decide what artists composition you liked best and print out the page.  (Since we discuss composition on all your projects you should have no trouble with this!)

  1. Get out your lined paper and pencil.

  1. Draw a quick layout to show the composition you liked from the artists above.

  1. Get together a light table, fountain pen, bonded paper, black and colored ink cartridges.

  1. Using the calligraphy we have practiced create your “alphabet art” with the same composition the artist used.  The lined paper should help you to get your letters straight with the help of a light table.
