Teacher Made Websites

Mr. Sanford’s website

The first teacher site I found was at a Catholic High School.  I chose to review the art instructor’s, Mr. Sanford’s, website.   I would assume he teaches all four grades.  The usefulness of his site is moderate – only good for information on the four principles of design.  Other than his picture and the four topics, the page is an empty canvas, waiting for information!

Commendations:

  • Use of powerpoint presentation to present information
  • Information that was presented was clear and concise

Information was relevant to topic

Reccomendations:

  • There is no contact information listed so a parent could get in touch through electronic means.
  • There was very little on his page other than five topics
  • Expected a more dynamic page from an art teacher
  • Lacked in content overall, should have more information
  • Links to relevant websites such as museums, etc. would be useful
  • A course syllabus, outline or other details would be useful

Dave Drapak and Sue Sodoway’s Website

Yeah!  A good art teacher webpage.  These two teachers, Dave Drapak and Sue Sodoway, teach art at Sackville High School in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  They have a wonderful site that is really dedicated to their students – showcasing artwork and providing them with the info they need without being overwhelming.

Commendations:

Excellent online gallery of student work displayed in the student’s portfolio.

Lists each grade and class assignment, with detailed information and essentially the lesson plan, with examples

Lists resources for students as well as an exhibition gallery of professional artwork

Gives contact information

Reccomendations:

It is hard to give recommendations when they have done a great job already.  A few suggestions:

Is there an art club?  Could they have a link?

The site, while containing detailed, useful information, is not “pretty” for being an art page.  Perhaps something with a little bit more design.

Are there local resources for kids?  Places they could study further?  A ceramics studio, private lessons, art schools?  These might be good links.
