*Electives

            -Worksheets for Instruction. This link will take you to a couple pages full of sites to visit for interesting, fun and knowledge enhancing worksheets.  Included are worksheets for language arts, math, science, social studies, research skills and more!

            -Lesson Plans.  This site contains what I would consider the best websites on the internet for finding lesson plans.  Not only are lesson plans included on the sites, but there are also ideas for thematic units, themes, holidays, bulletin boards, resources for research, teacher discussions, etc.  Anything you need to know is on these sites.

            -Pornography.  Pornography is a current concern among educators utilizing the advances of the internet in their classrooms.  This link will provide one example of how educators may inform their students of the procedures to follow when a pornography site is accidentally accessed during instruction.

            -Teacher Made Websites.  It is helpful sometimes to view other teachers’ websites to discover new ideas for planning lessons and curriculum, as well as activities for the students to complete and important information for the parents.  This link will provide 2 websites that contain ideas for teachers to use in their classrooms.  The ideas may be manipulated to meet the needs of each class.

            -E-Learning.  This link provides an evaluation, according to MD standards, of 2 on-line course sites offering high school students alternatives to regular school placements.  The two sites evaluated are Apex Learning and Class.com, Inc.

            -Silicon Snake Oil.  What are the negative aspects of the internet?  On this page there is a list of 5 issues Clifford Stoll explores, as well as a rebuttal to each of them.

            -Safety on the Internet.  The internet poses new safety issues for students in the classroom.  This link will take you to a policy drafted that parents and students may sign, acknowledging their receipt and understanding of the policy for internet use in the classroom.  A sample letter to the parents is also included, but it is on a separate page.

            -Citing Internet Sources.  This link will take you to a page that will provide a link to an MLA style site that gives good information for students on the necessary information needed to cite internet sources and how to do so.  The page also includes a couple examples of citations done in APA format.

            -Viruses.  This link will provide a description of computer viruses, how they infect computers, how they spread to other computers and how to avoid the infection on your own computer.  Also explored are virus hoaxes and why they pose a danger.

            -Publications.  Technology in the classroom is new (especially the internet) and leaves educators with questions.  This link will offer some articles and presentations that will hopefully answer some of those questions and provide suggestions as to how to integrate the technology into the classroom.  The articles are found via meta sites which are useful for finding information on technology.

*Web Drop-Ins

            -Drop-in.  This site contains an activity about the birds in Kenya.  Students are required to visit a website and then a few questions, comparing and contrasting a few types of birds.  Students will make use of their observation skills, as well as their ability to compare different subjects and make a judgment at the end.

            -Drop-in2.  This site provides a timeline activity for students to complete on the history of Kenya.  Students also must use the site to find information about the country’s early settlement, the original people and it’s first president.

            -Drop-in3.  This link will provide an activity on the country of Kenya.  Students need to locate information about the national language, various cities, neighboring countries, etc.  The activity culminates in the creation of a pie graph representing the religions found in the country.

            -Drop-in4.  This link will connect you with an activity exploring a zoo debate-are they good or bad?  Students will form their own opinion after reviewing two websites and then they must create a map of a zoo that will satisfy both critics and supporters of zoos.

            -Drop-in5.  This site contains an activity for students on the topic of nutrition.  Students review the food guide pyramid, answer some questions and then create a chart, listing all the foods they eat over a period of 5 days.  At the end of the time period, students will review their charts to determine if they are eating a balanced diet, as suggested by the food guide pyramid.

*Copyright.  This link will take you to a site outlining a few guidelines, through the form of imaginary scenarios, for those interested in understanding if the copyrighted information contained in the project they created follows the Fair Use Guidelines.

*Course Module.  Chat Safety On-Line.  This page provides an activity for students to complete regarding the safety of students while using chat rooms.  Students are required to visit several websites, gather information and integrate the information into a letter to parents with a tip sheet.

*Webquest.  This site will take you on a journey back in time to visit the Titanic and meet some of the people traveling on her.  You are a newspaper journalist and must gather information to write the feature article for your paper.

*Webquest Bibliography.  This page contains links to 5 other webquests that are of notable worth, including one about storms, the holocaust and Colonial Williamsburg.  Students explore history, science and culture through these webquest adventures.  Each one is an adventure of its own and should be a delight for students and teachers alike.

*Journal Article Critique 2.  This page contains a critique of Todd Oppenheimer’s article titled “The Computer Delusion.”  In this article Mr. Oppenheimer explores the research on computer use in the classroom and whether or not it actually improves student learning.
