ATHLETES AS HEROES?

INTRODUCTION

There is a lot of controversy today whether or not athletes should be considered heroes. It seems that you can always find a story in the news about an athlete who is in trouble with the law and yet has tons of fans who think of him or her as their hero. For this Web Dropin you will be taking a position on this issue. You will be writing an argument for a debate that will either support this issue or one that argues against it.

If you have a post-it on your computer with the word “HERO” on it you will take the position that athletes are indeed heroes. If you have a post-it on your computer with the word “ATHLETE” you will be taking the position that athletes are not heroes.

Visit the websites below to research this topic. Please go to all of the websites! This information will help you form your argument. When you visit keep these questions in mind –

1. What kinds of qualities do athletes seem to possess?

2. Are these qualities the same qualities that heroes possess?

Now that you have done your research you are ready to write your argument. You will do this on the computer and will print it out to hand it in. Please keep a copy for yourself in your folder. We will be having a classroom debate on this issue next week.
