Revolutionary War

 

Teaching American History – This website describes the history of the United States from its beginnings through World War II.  Students can follow along to audio lectures and even look at important historical documents that have shaped our history.  This would be a great site for students in high school who are studying American history.

The History Place – This site is a good resource for students to find out the chronological sequence of before, during, and after the American Revolution.  Students are able to click on a link that takes them to the various years of the Revolution they want to study, including a link where they can read Declaration of Independence.

The American Revolution – This site is dedicated to information about the Revolutionary War.  Students can find information on specific battles, people, and read historical documents about the time period.  In addition, there are chat rooms and discussion boards where students can share their information with one another.

National Archives – This site allows students to read an analysis the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.  Students are able to discover reasons why these important documents were created and how they have impacted the United States.

Revolutionary War Battles – This site allows students to find information on specific battles during the Revolutionary War.  The site offers students the ability to find dates, locations, generals, and significance of the battles in a quick and user friendly war.  By clicking on a link students have tons of information they can research.

The Articles of Confederation – This site allows students to research and understand the Articles of Confederation.  In addition, the site has biographies of the signers, articles, and a chart showing the difference between the Articles and the Constitution.  I think this site would be best used for middle school students and teachers.

Founding Fathers

 

Founding Fathers – This website discusses the roles of the Founding Fathers of the United States.  In addition, the site has links to other Founding Fathers sites, as well as copies of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.  This site would be useful for students K-12.

Teaching About George Washington- This site describes today’s perceptions about George Washington and his historical importance in our nations history. Students will enjoy learning about not only George Washington’s vast accomplishments, but some of his flaws as a leader and a person.

John Adams – This link is dedicated to the life of John Adams, one of our important Founding Fathers.  Students can find out personal information about John Adams, as well as a bibliography, Cabinet information, links, and images of our second President.  Also, this site offers information on all of our Presidents, so students can find research on all of them in at one site.

Thomas Jefferson – This site is dedicated to the life and preservation of Thomas Jefferson’s home Monticello.  Students are able to get a virtual tour of Monticello and gather information on Thomas Jefferson’s fascinating life.  The site also has teaching materials for both students and teachers where they can gather online lesson plans and interactive computer activities.

Alexander Hamilton - This site holds more than 200 resources about Alexander Hamilton (1755–1804), founding father, first Secretary of the Treasury, part-author of the Federalist Papers and advocate of a strong central government (site).  In addition, the site contains primary source documents and a discussion board where students can interact with one another.

War of 1812

War of 1812 – This site gives good background information about the War of 1812.  Students can read about the causes for the war, as well as major military campaigns and the peace treaty that would end the war.

Re-living History: The War of 1812 – This site is a dynamic research and reference tool, designed to spread awareness of one of the most important periods of American history (site).  Included in this are links to a timeline, battles, people, and the aftermath of the War of 1812 that can be useful for students and teachers.

Civil War

The Civil War – This is a general site dedicated to the Civil War.  It can be used as an effective tool for students who want to research general information about the war, including, battles, timelines, music, and primary documents.

The Valley of the Shadow – This is an excellent site that focuses on two Civil War communities, one Northern and one Southern, from the time of John Brown’ raid through Reconstruction.  This archive contains letter, pictures, diaries, newspapers, and speeches from Augusta County, Virginia, and Franklin County, Pennsylvania (site).

Poetry and Music of the War Between the States – This site has poetry and music of the Civil War era.  Teachers in both history and English can use this site to help teach poetry and the historical aspects of the war.  The site also contains the popular music of the times that can be fun for students to hear.

Civil War Biography – This site is a good resource for students to find information on important individuals during the Civil War.  By clicking on a respective link students are taken to a biography of a Civil War figure.

The Civil War Archive – This site has regimental information, diary experts, and letters of soldiers.  A site like this one is important because students can read from primary documents to understand the thoughts and feelings about the soldiers, in ways they can find in textbooks.

Reconstruction

 

 

African American Odyssey – This site discusses the Reconstruction era and how it affected the African American community.  The site iTs visually stimulating because students can look at pictures and maps that depict the societal hardships African Americans had to endure in the years following the Civil War.

Teacher Resources of the Civil War and Reconstruction – This is a great site for teachers because it has links to topics related to the Civil War and Reconstruction.  Also, there are various topics and links to teaching activities that teachers can use in their classrooms, including looking at primary documents of events from the time period, that student’s would be interesting in reading about.
