The Newbery Medal

 

This award is presented to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.  It is named in honor of John Newbery, a well-known 18th century British bookseller.  It is awarded annually to a book published in the preceding year.  Books that are considered but do not win are given an Honor Medal.  It was first given in 1922.

 

 

 

 

  

The Caldecott Medal

 

This award is presented to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.  It is named in honor of Randolph Caldecott, a 19th century English illustrator.  It is awarded annually to a book published in the preceding year.  Books that are considered but do not win are given an Honor Medal.  It was first given in 1938.

 
                                                                              

 

                                                                                                     

 

The Coretta Scott King Award

 

This award is resented to authors and illustrators of African descent whose distinguished books promote an understanding and appreciation of the “American Dream.”  It commemorates the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and honors his widow, Coretta Scott King, for her courage and determination in continuing the work for peace.  It is presented annually, and was established in 1970.

 
 

 


    

 

The Pura Belpre Award

 

This award is presented to the Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.  It is named after Pura Belpre, the first Latina librarian from the New York Public Library.  This award was first presented in 1996.

 
 


 

 

 

The Batchelder Award

 

This award is presented to an American publisher for a children’s book considered to be the most outstanding of those books originally published in a foreign language or a foreign country, and then translated into English and published in the U.S.  It is named after Mildred L. Batchelder, former director of the Association for Library Service to Children.  It was established in 1966.

 
 

 

 

 


 

 

 

The Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award

 

This award is presented annually to the author of the most distinguished informational book published in English during the preceding year.  Books that are considered, but do not win, are given Honor Medals.  This award was established in 2001.   

 
 


The Black-Eyed Susan Award

 

This award honors outstanding books, chosen annually by the students of Maryland.  The nominees are chosen by a committee of media specialists.  Students are allowed to vote after reading a required number of books from the nominated list.  This award was first given in 1992, and is named after the state flower.
