Search Tips

Here are five tips for searching the Internet so that it is easier to find what you want.

  1. Be very specific. The Internet is a vast expanse of information and you need to make sure that you narrow down your search as much as possible. (For example if you are looking for information on Honey Bees you would get better results then just searching Bees.)
  2.

  3. Most search engines will search for multiple words. If you are searching for Koala Bears it will look for pages that contain both Koala and Bear.
  4.

  5. When searching for an exact phrase put it in quotes. For example, "I have a dream" will give you pages that specifically have those words in it. If you do not use quotation marks the search engine will split the words up and look for each word individually.
  6.

  7. Common words are not necessary. When searching exclude common words such as "and," "or," "the". (For example, type "green eggs ham" or "Winnie Pooh").
  8.

  9. Search engines are not case sensitive. If searching for a proper name or for a word with capital letters it does not matter because whether you type the capital letters it will give you the same results. (For example, Abraham Lincoln will be searched as abraham lincoln).
