Publications
There are many helpful publications available on the Internet. Below are a selection of publications that will be useful to me as a future media specialist, along with an example of an article available in each.
School
Library Media Research - This online journal will be useful in keeping
abreast of techniques used in school libraries. It contains scholarly
research on a variety of library/media subjects, but is readable and
useful. For example, a recent article analyzing the effects of using
journals as part of information searches was:
Harada, V.H. (2002). Personalizing the Information Search Process: A Case Study of Journal Writing with Elementary Students. School Library Media Research, 5. Retrieved July 13, 2002, from http://www.ala.org/aasl/SLMR/vol5/search/search.html
Teacher Librarian - Not all the articles are available online for this journal, but some great features are, including: Web Wonders, with lists of links for kids on different topics; Bestsellers lists; and on-line journal and professional organization links. This is VERY user-friendly and immediately useful.
One article summarized librarians responses to "Why do we need a teacher-librarian or a library when we have the Internet?. Included are "snappy comebacks", more thoughtful responses and also include links to other articles on similar subjects:
Kahn, C. & Mallette, M. (2002). Why do we need a teacher-librarian or a library when we have the internet? (Electronic version). Teacher Librarian, 29:4. Retrieved July 13, 2002, from http://www.teacherlibrarian.com/pages/29_4_feature_bonus.html
InfoSearcher - A very hands-on newsletter for curriculum and technology integration - a great resource! This newsletter includes a selection of "Cybertours" to help educators use the Internet "to create active, involved learners" - very helpful! Also features CyberSites, with listing of websites focusing on specific curriculum topics; Pipeline explores interactive websites; and The Stacks reviews the latest books on Internet topics.
Adams, H. (2000). FamiliesConnect: Library Media Specialists Reaching Out to Families. InfoSearcher.com. Retrieved July 13, 2002, from http://www.infosearcher.com/features04.htm This article encouraged media specialists to get their families involved with American Association of School Librarian's "FamiliesConnect", which offers a free online course to families so parents can help their children use the Internet. (http://www.ala.org/ICONN/familiesconnect.html)

www.Electronic-School.com - This journal explores issues involved in integrating technology into schools. It is not hands-on help, but educates about current issues as they arise. One recent article was: Levine, E. (September, 2001) Online Safety. Electronic-School.com. Retrieved July 13, 2002, from http://www.electronic-school.com/2001/09/0901onlinesafety.html
This article discusses the mandates of the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), discussing creating an Internet Safety policy and filtering requirements.
Computers
in Librarians - This online newsletter deals specifically with the issues of
computers in libraries. All of the articles are not available online, but
those that were I found helpful. One of the articles described in detail
how one library integrated new computers and created an Internet policy.
Richey, C.K. (2002). Molding effective internet policies (Electronic
version). Computers in Libraries, 22:6, 16-21.
Electronic Journals in the Field of Education This is a great listing of journals in many education-related fields which are available online, are scholarly, peer-reviewed, full text and free. http://aera-cr.ed.asu.edu/links.html
