Joseph in the May/June 2002 electronic version of MultiMedia Schools. The author presents the work of Kathleen Waugamann, a fourth grade teacher, and details Ms. Waugamanns use of technology to increase her students prior (background) knowledge and prepare them to understand a book she had selected. Her text was the book Teammates by Peter Golenbock, a story about Jackie Robinson and his friendship with Pee Wee Reese in a time of segregation. In order to help students relate to being a professional baseball player, Ms. Waugamann had students visit preselected Web sites to view baseball cards, and then used digital photos and Word to create baseball cards of each student for a bulletin board display. She created a PowerPoint presentation for her students using Web sources to depict the injustices of segregation during Jackie Robinsons time. The Web sites she used are listed and described. Lastly, she published a newsletter article to inform parents about this activity and ask them to share their knowledge of segregation in that time. Ms. Waugamanns detailed lesson plan, as well as a sample of a PowerPoint slide is included. I loved the specificity and useful content of this article. Using technology is highly motivating for students, and I am certain most teachers are convinced that they need to increase their own technology skills and develop lesson plans using the Net and other resources. This article is an excellent example of what can be done to use technology in ways that are not overwhelming but rather inspiringly attainable. I actually felt like I could apply the activities used to my own job. In addition, the specific goal of building background knowledge is one which teachers often face, and too often use to explain students poor performance (blaming background or home life instead of their own inability to reach all students.) This lesson plan shows what a teacher can do to prepare students and engage them in exploring complex topics. Id like to share this article and others like it with our staff development teacher to help in planning technology training for our teachers for the next school year.
