Safety on the Internet

A Few Precautions Can Prevent Problems in the Long Run

Dear Parent or Guardian:

As part of the school curriculum, your child will be using the Internet for research and online class activities. With Internet use comes the responsibility of learning to use the Internet in a safe manner. Our school has filters in place to restrict inappropriate sites but these filters cannot control all access. Some precautions that I have put in place are as follows:

• Students will search using specific engines such as Yahooligans and Kids click.
• To access the computer, a student must have a research topic or online activity assigned by the teacher. There will not be free search on the computer.
• All computer use will be monitored.
• Classroom policies and procedures will be updated as needed.

I have designed the Internet Use policy (see below) and any student using the Internet must have the policy signed by a Guardian and themselves prior to using a school computer. Please review the policy with your child. Any infraction of the policy will result in your child not using the computers until the infraction is reviewed with you. Internet Use Policy

• I will respect the computer equipment and Internet at school.
• I will use the Internet for education purposes only.
• I understand that if I abuse any of the rules, I will lose the privilege of using the Internet
• I will never give any private information out over the Internet. This means my name, age, school

name, phone number or anything.

• I will tell my teachers if I see or read something on the Internet that upsets me or that I feel is wrong.
• I understand that my parents can be held financially liable for any damages that I cause to the computer equipment at school. My parents are also responsible for any harm I cause to people as a result of any violation to the rules.
• I will only use the school Internet if I have permission with teachers supervising me. I understand that there will be no unsupervised Internet use.
• Posted at the computer is the following Student Reminders Regarding the Internet Use

Do not get into an argument online.

Do not agree to meet to meet with anyone you have met online.

Keep your personal information confidential.

Do not open emails unless you know the sender.

Do not use bad language.

Do not make racial comments.

Tell an adult if you run into something that makes you feel uncomfortable while you are on line.
