The health risks of tobacco are well known, yet the rates of smoking and the use of chewing tobacco continue to grow. Many people are picking up these habits when they are young - in fact, 90% of all adult smokers started when they were kids. And each day, more than 4,400 kids become regular smokers.  This unit focuses on Kids and Smoking.

Complete the following activities:

1. Visit Smoking Stinks by clicking on the picture and read the article.  You will be quizzed in class on the main points from this article.

2.  Click on the link, On the Teen Scene: Young People Talk with FDA Commissioner About Smoking and read the article.  Write a 1,000 word essay using the information from this article and the Smoking Stinks article to discuss your opinions on youth smoking.

3.  Click on the link, COST: Children Opposed to Smoking Tobacco, and navigate through the website.  Once you’ve familiarized yourself with the website, go to the Get Involved area.  Pick one of the many available options to help protect children from the dangers of smoking.  This must be completed by the end of the unit.  Turn in a three page report documenting your experience with copies of any work you completed for the project.
