Civil War Statistics - How many
enlisted
to fight, how many were drafted?
Step One: Go to: PBS.org/civilwar
To find
the number of Union and Confederate men likely drafted:
A. Stats.: On your paper, subtract the number of union soldiers
who enlisted from the total number who served.
B. Subtract the number of Confederate soldiers
who enlisted from the total number who served.
C. Now divide the number likely drafted by the
total men served for each side to find the percentage of soldiers who
were drafted.
D. Which side has a higher percentage?
E. Read about the Union Draft
and Confederate
Draft (conscriptions) to learn more about draft efforts on both
sides.
F. Based on your reading and the percentage of
soldiers that had to be drafted and the percentage who enlisted, which
side, Union or Confederate, had a higher proportion of volunteers to
fight the war, why? Was the war more popular in the Union or the
Confederacy? Write at least one five sentence paragraph explaining your
answer.
