Annotated Chronology

 

      1.April 12 – 14, 1861 – Fort Sumter – 0 casualties

The battle that sparked the war when Gen. Beauregard of South Carolina fired 50 cannon on Union Troops in the Federal Fort, Fort Sumter.  Union Gen. Anderson had to surrender Fort Sumter to the Confederacy.

 

2.  July 21, 1861 - First Battle of Bull Run – 4,700 est. casualties.

The first major land battle of the civil war.  The Union Army was shattered by the Confederate army.  Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson became famous. Union Gen. McClellan took over management of the Union army. 

 

3.  Shiloh – April 6-7, 1862 – est. casualties 23,746

On the sixth of April, the Confederate Army under Gen. Johnston made a surprise attack on the Union Army under Gen. Grant.  The Union Army lost a lot of men, but held strong until evening.  Overnight, the Union Army received reinforcements which helped them defeat the Confederates on the seventh of April.
