LS 521 Submission Elective: Translation

5 situations that I think would benefit using these translation sites in the classroom

1) ESL students. Communication barriers exist. A teacher might be able to hand out test/ directions in both English and Spanish (example).

2) Students could set up Pen Pals with another from a foreign country and write in their own language and translate the friends. J

3) Reading papers written by and ESL student. The translation engines might assist a teacher.

4) Foreign language studies. They can take look at French Newspapers for example on line and translate them and check it against the computer translations.

5) This might also help a teacher in writing home to a parent that doesn’t speak English. However.. The note must be written in straight language with few innuendos or slang. Otherwise the message might not translate clearly.

So, while daylight-saving time has been an utter failure in actually saving any daylight (for a rainy night, perhaps?), it does accomplish three things, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation:

• It saves energy. When we're awake, we're more likely to have our TVs, VCRs, and lights on (among other home appliances). By shifting the hours we're likely to be awake to correspond with the daylight outside, we're less likely to have the lights on, so we use less electricity.
• It saves lives. When people's waking hours correspond with daylight hours, they're safer. Traffic accidents, for example, are less likely when it's light out.
• It cuts down on crime. Crime tends to happen after dark. As is the case with accidents, people are less likely to fall victim to crime when their waking hours are synched up with the sun.

I did this to see how the translation from the original may have changed the article. Some changed but the meaning did get across correctly? Right?? It is actually sort of humorous to see the changes…..
