Elective #12-Webcams

         LOOK AT THAT!

Webcams are a fantastic way to literally show the world to students.  Below is a list of my 5 favorite web cam sites.  Included are links to visit.  The intention of this page is to have it be a innovative resource for educators so they may integrate new technologies and experiences into their student's education.

The Deep Creek Cam shows the ski slopes.  In the summer they are not covered with snow, but this gives students an idea of what the slopes look like in the summer.  This would be great for students that ski or vacation at Deep Creek and have not ever seen the slopes without snow.  This site would also be great for older students in the winter when people are skiing to discuss winter sports, Winter Olympics, and ski safety.  It would be appropriate for a unit on the Olympics, winters sports, or part of a student's presentation about a winter break activity.

Zebra Fitness webcams would be a great tool for a strength training class.  Instruction could include the display of certain exercises or fads that are occurring in New Zealand right now, or showing proper form for a typical workout.  This would be a great classroom tool also to discuss the different styles and schools of thoughts that are exhibited.  Safety evaluations could also occur on the people lifting weights. The webcam is also very clear and tells when updates are about to occur.

Skate Park webcam is great.  It has very continuous updates and displays skaters performing all sorts of skills.  This would be great for a discussion about the trends in sports, for example how X games and extreme sports have changed over the years.  A lot kids skateboard, and skate parks are also becoming more popular as it gives kids a legal place to skate.

High Tech Home of the US Luge this webcam is great because it shows the US Luge team training for the Olympics.  The only downfall is that at certain time it is going to be more active than others.  But to watch the training would be great for a discussion about the Winter Olympics and the hard work that the public usually does not see that goes into being an Olympic athlete.  This would be a perfect part of a unit on the winter Olympics as well as the training that happens behind the scenes.  A PE teacher could really make a use out of this because the luge is a sport that is not as well known as skiing.  This webcam can be used to introduce a new sport to students.

Virginia Aquarium's Sharks webcam is a great tool to take kids out of the classroom (figuratively).  Students would be mesmerized by the footage.  It is practically like taking them to the aquarium.  When discussing the food chain or the ocean this web cam would be appropriate.  In PE this webcam would be appropriate to analyze the movement of the sharks and to compare and contrast it to the way we move.  Understanding a shark's strength could also be discussed.  It would be a great portion of a unit about the ocean from their general teachers.  This webcam would even be appropriate in a higher level anatomy class to see the way a shark moves and understand it's makeup.
