Another Aspect of Healthy Living…

Nutrition

We have:

  1. Learned why physical activity is necessary
  2. Discovered why physical activity is essential to healthy living
  3. Identified different kinds of physical activity
  4. Identified different recommendations set for physical activity

Now we are going to identify another aspect of healthy living.  Nutrition!  We are going to learn about good and bad foods and explore some resources that we can use on a daily basis to help us make nutritious choices!

A tool that we have as a guideline to eating nutritiously is the food pyramid.  We are going to learn the different parts of the food pyramid and what types of food we should be eating.

Click on the food pyramid below.  It will take you to a website where you will be able to use your mouse to scroll over the different portions of the food pyramid to help you fill in the chart.  Make a version of this chart in your Health notebook.

Let's analyze some of the information we have just organized.

  1. What is the smallest food group?  Why do you think it is the smallest?

  1. Do you think there is significance to the way the pyramid is arranged?

  1. Do think your food habits are in line with these recommendations?  Discuss your yes or no answer.  Discuss any changes you feel would be beneficial to your health.

  1. What are some foods that you eat now that you think could be switched out for a healthier choice?  For example, whole grain crackers or carrots instead of french fries.

Finally, let's all remember the website we used today to help us with the Food Pyramid.  This website can be a tool for us as individuals in the future.  I would encourage you all to go through this site as you go about your next few days and eating.

Looking ahead:

Due in one week, write down everything you eat in your health journal by day.  For each day in your journal, you must have ONE new point that you learned by perusing the Food Pyramid site we used today.  You should have at least 4 days worth of a food journal, with at least 4 new points from the website.  We will be analyzing your journals and comparing them to the food pyramid, and then creating some healthy ideal diets that we will make as individuals with foods that we know we like and can have in our houses.

As you are completing this assignment, please feel free to email me with any questions.  Happy Eating!!
