Article Critique 2: This site includes, “SchoolWorld Projects Bring Together Schools Around the World”, an article designed to explain an exchange idea between teachers.  Although I thought the idea sounded intriguing I was disappointed that the article didn’t explain it more fully.  A summary of the article, and my critique are included.

Web Drop In 1 – If adjectives are what you are looking for, don’t miss this.  The “One Eyed, One Horned, Flying Purple People Eater” will guide your students to adjective expertise.

Web Drop In 2 – Fact vs. Opinion – a tough one for kids.  What’s the difference?  This site includes activities for students to help them distinguish between the two while checking out a subject they will be interested in.  Have fun here!

Web Drop In 3 –“Where Y’All From” – A lesson in diction.  Students will become familiar with diction and regional difference, as well as the importance of including this in short stories.

          Web Drop In 4 -    Iraq: For or Against?”  Make a stand, and convince others to agree with you.  Kids definitely have strong opinions, even about world topics.  This gives them the opportunity to not only state what their personal thoughts are on the war in Iraq, but to convince others to agree with them.  This is a continuation of a persuasive writing unit that tries to get kids to effectively prove their opinions.

Web Drop In 5 – “The House of Dies Drear” Does the Civil War era fascinate you?  Do you admire Harriet Tubman and her efforts with the Underground Railroad, as I do?  If yes, then you must check out this web drop as an introduction to this wonderful mystery story about a modern day kid who moves into a house that was part of the Underground Railroad system.  This activity allows kids the opportunity to gain background knowledge so they can connect with the novel. When kids start reading this book, they do NOT want to put it down.

Web Quest“Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry,” is an awesome novel by Mildred D. Taylor, which allows kids the opportunity to travel back in history and experience life in the Depression Era 30’s.  This activity is a pre-reading activity where kids explore the themes of segregation, the Civil Rights Movement, sharecropping, and the Great Depression.  When kids gain an understanding of this background information they are truly ready to connect to this novel.
