Summary                    

This bibliography is a compilation of websites pertaining to bats. These links will be helpful to the second grader wishing to learn more about bats. These sites are also for the teacher who wants to provide activities to supplement the second grade science curriculum.  Many of these sites have games to play, webquests to complete, and book recommendations.

 

Websites for Students

*Enchanted Learning- This page provides facts about the bat anatomy and different kinds of bats. *Bats4Kids- This page provides 9 facts about the bat. You will find out where they live, what they eat and common myths. A bat quiz, game, link to how to build your own bat house is also included. This site is great for the elementary students and teacher.  Date visited – 2/13/06.

*Adventures of Echo the Bat-This is an interactive story of Echo the bat written by G. Butcher from NASA. This is not just an adventure but you will also learn about remote sensing and electromagnetic spectrum. This website is suitable for ages 5-9.  Date visited 2/13/06

*National Geographic Kids- This page highlights the vampire bat. A video, audio clips and fun facts are included.  Links to the biogeography of the bat and the natural history of the bat are included. This site is perfect for elementary school students.  Date visited 2/13/06

*Bats- This is a great site for primary school children and especially one that is an audio learner. Learn about the baby bat, bats in hibernation and the food that bats eat.  Date visited 2/14/06

*First Nature: Windows on Wildlife- This page is an illustrative guide to the many bats that are found in Great Britain and Wales. Thirteen species of bats are discussed.  This page is great for the visual learner because of its vivid photographs. Very suitable for elementary to high school students.  Date visited 2/14/06.

*Bat Conservation Trust:Kids- This is a great site! Very thorough and easy to navigate. Some of the questions that will be answered while visiting this site include what is biodiversity, why do bats hang upside down, and what do bats eat? The site also offers a nice feature that address what bats do each month of the year. Perfect for elementary, middle and high school.   Date visited 2/14/06

*Bats: Misunderstood Creatures -  This site was developed by  a group of  8th graders in a language arts class in Gander, Newfoundland after reading the book Spiderwing.  The main purpose of the site was to help the student understand more clearly why Kenneth Oppel wrote the book. The site focuses on the habitat, reproduction, food, echolocation,  hibernation, and migration of the bat. There is also a teacher’s corner that highlights the integration across the curriculum.  Date visited 2/15/06

*Yahooligans Animals – This website is a Ranger Rick guide to animals. The categories of animals highlighted include reptiles, amphibians, mammals, fish, insects, and birds. This site is perfect for elementary age children.  The site is easy to read. Six species of bats are listed.  Date visited 2/15/06.

*Organization for Bat Conservation –This website, from the Organization for Bat Conservation, which works to save bats is an excellent site.  Even though the site is not designed specifically for children, a section for children is offered. Children will have the opportunity to sponsor a bat, purchase bat items, view photographic gallery,  and take a bat quiz.   Date visited 2/16/06

*KidZone Bats- This website provides information about the bat in a simple and easy to read format.  There are puzzles, color by number worksheets and fact sheets designed specifically for the elementary student.  Date visited 2/16/06

*Bat Quest: In Search of Stellaluna-Appropriate for Grades 2-3.   This webquest focuses on 2 bats: the megabat and the microbat. Students will complete five jobs before becoming a bat expert.  Date visited 2/13/06.

Goin Batty: This website was created by elementary school students when they were studying the Amazon Rainforest as part of the Jason Project.  This site features folklore written by Virginia Hamilton, Paul Goble and Janell Cannon. All pictures are hand drawn by the children.  Date visited 2/15/06
